Our Local History

In the fall of 2020, two dynamic educators, Ms. Evelyn Howie and Dr. Tamara Turner, met to initial discuss education, but a power higher than either of these esteemed ladies had other plans. From this ordainly orchestrated encounter, Ms. Howie introduced Dr. Turner to Ms. Brittany Patrick, a previously inducted member of the Greensboro brand of NAUW, and a discussion ensued about the rebirth of the branch began. On May 26,2021, Dr. Turner held the first NAUW interest meeting for women in and around the Greensboro area.

On August 25, 2021, an organizational zoom meeting was held for potential members who were interested in becoming members of the National Association of University Women. As a result of this meeting, official plans were established for the formation of what would become the Greensboro Metro Branch of NAUW.

The Greensboro Metro Branch of NAUW was chartered on September 25, 2021 at 5:30pm at the Hawthorne Inn and Conference Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.      Our first virtual meeting was held on Wednesday, October 20, 2021. It was established that the monthly meeting day would be the third Wednesday of each month beginning at 8:00pm promptly.

In December 2022, the Greensboro Metro Branch came together to participate in its first Community Service Project spearheaded by the Health Team, Annissa P. Jones and Nikki Murphy. The members prepared five bags each for distribution to local women’s centers. A total of seventy bags were donated to Family Services of Piedmont. Each bag contained a pair of gloves, a toboggan, a pair of socks, soap and deodorant. The bags were dropped off at noon at the 315 East Washington Street Greensboro, NC location through the coordination efforts of Madam Corresponding Secretary Nikki Murphy.

The first Sisters’ mixture was held on Wednesday, January 12th with nine members in attendance.  This was an opportunity for members of the Greensboro Metro Branch to bond and to get to know each other outside of NAUW. Sisters played a game of Kahoot where they were required to answer questions about our beloved NAUW. In addition, members were asked to identify sisters from a list of questions. The sister with the most points received a NAUW scarf. Sisters in attendance prepared green mock tails and charcuterie boards arranged with their favorite green foods. The sister with the most innovative board received a gift.

The Greensboro Metro Branch, led by its president, Dr. Tamara Turner, participated in a virtual Joint Founders’ Day Program on March 20,2022 with the Raleigh Branch led by its president Shirley A. Hinton. After the closed ceremony, the branches were treated to a very informative speech by Dr. Turner entitled “Critical Race Theory: For Such a Time as This!” The program ended with member introductions and a dessert showcase.

On March 31, 2022, the scholarship committee, led by 2nd Vice President Jacqueline Pender-Jones, prepared its scholarship packet for distribution to qualified female seniors in an effort to present its first scholarship to a qualified senior at James Benson Dudley Senior High. Two applicants completed the application process. They were equally qualified; therefore, both of the scholarship recipient’s, Nona Gaffney-Brown and Karmen Sturdivant, received a $500.00 scholarship at the Capping Ceremony on May, 19, 2022.

The Greensboro Metro Branch instituted its fundraiser on April 21st and ended it on April 25. The fundraiser was Double Good Popcorn. The branch was able to acquire $2,912 in four days. These funds were used towards the Metro Branch’s scholarship and HBCU support.

Always seeking other sisters who wish to affiliate with our organization, 2nd Vice President Dr. Idenna Glenn informed our organization that there was one lady who was actively seeking to become a member. On April 30, Sherry Woods was inducted into the Greensboro, Metro Branch. Sherry was warmly accepted and is making strides to learn as much as she can about our branch and participate in all programs of the branch.
